Union County is a member of the regional Centralina Council of Governments. It encompasses 640 square miles and shares borders with two South Carolina counties. It's seat and largest city is Monroe, a town whose courthouses have seen their share of litigation over the years. This courthouse is not the same structure that stood back in 1958, when the famous "Kissing Case" took place, in which two young negro boys, aged seven and nine, were arrested on a charge of 'rape'. One of the boys had been kissed on the cheek by a white girl during a schoolyard game. The boys were ultimately held for over six months at the county jail, sparking international protest.
Today's Union County courthouse dispenses a more balanced justice, while the old building has been maintained by residents for its historical value.
