Traffic Violations - Distracted Driving

One thing about the exponentially evolving technological paradigm with which we are confronted today is that we depend more and more on our electronic devices. Applications amalgamate across the gamut, from communication to entertainment to navigation to scheduling. Technology is becoming more integral to our lives each passing lunar cycle. Many states have completely eliminated the use of these devices at all while driving. These states include Alabama, California, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New York, Oregon, and Washington. However, almost all states have enacted a ban on texting while driving. Distractions can pertain to more than just electronic devices, distractions can be anything that may affect or interfere with your ability to focus on driving safely.

There are three main types of distractions.

1. Visual Distractions

Taking your eyes off the road: looking down to change the song on your iPhone or turning to grab something from the back seat, exemplifies the intention of this traffic violation.

2. Manual Distractions

This is something we are all probably guilty of. Removing your hands from the wheel because you can’t wait to get home to have a hot fresh Brioche’, or driving with your knee while reaching for a laser pointer in your back pocket, these are a few of the dangerous things. If the dog barks, or a bee stings, don’t let go the wheel. Or else you’ll find trouble with your local law, remember those cuffs are steel.

3. Cognitive Distractions

This is perhaps the most critical distraction that affects us because it’s something we don’t even realize we are doing.  When your mind isn’t focused, you aren’t as alert or aware of your surroundings while driving and this, more often than not, results in accidents. Make sure you are focused on driving, avoid distractions at all costs to prevent getting a ticket or causing an accident. Try to finish phone calls before driving, create a playlist to avoid being distracted by changing music, and always be aware of your surroundings. Be sure you know the laws in your state, and keep our roads safe.
